Whitby – Heritage shaped by the Sea
Whitby's natural harbour has been a haven for seafarers for many centuries.
The panoramic views from high above the harbour, with its unspoilt charm and character, have preserved Whitby's true picture postcard quality, ensuring that its reputation continues as one of England's most attractive seaside towns.
Getting to Whitby
Coastliner route 840 Leeds to Whitby runs through Tadcaster, York, Malton and Pickering.
The Coastliner terminus in Whitby is in the Bus Station, by the harbour and convenient for the seafront and all major attractions. See the map of Whitby for more details.
The number before the attraction relates to their location on our Whitby map.
1. The Harbour
Whitby's natural harbours thrive with many fishing boats and pleasure craft. Much of the Upper Harbour has been redeveloped as a marina, but none of the harbour's charm has been lost.
2. St Mary's Church
Climb the 199 steps from the harbour to visit this unique church, dating from the 12th Century. Panoramic views across the harbour from the churchyard make the climb very worthwhile.
3. Whitby Abbey
Adjacent to St Mary's Church, the emotive ruin of Whitby Abbey has a commanding cliff-top location, which has inspired many writers and artists, with fantastic views over the town, the surrounding headland, and out to sea. The Abbey is a magnificent reminder of the early church's power and dedication, and symbolised England's earliest Christian traditions.
